Wedding Crashers
New Line Cinema
Starring: Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughn, Christopher Walken, Rachel McAdams, Isla Fisher
Directed by: David Dobkin
Rating: ***1/2
Plot: A pair of uber committed womanizers who go to the lengths of preparing their calenders for wedding seasons. Why? So they can crash weddings and pick up horny chicks who feel the effects of romance in the air. Sadly the two find themselves at odds with each other when John Beckwith (Owen Wilson) falls in love while Jeremy (Vince Vaughn) hooks up with a chick who is filled with crazy. Crazy antics ensue until like the last forty minutes where this movie falls into boredom land.
Acting: Owen Wilson is actually a very balanced comic actor from movies like Bottle Rocket and Life Aquatic to movies like Zoolander and shit stains like Starsky and Hutch. John Beckwith as a character isn't all the funny, Wilson is placed in more of a romantic lead than a comic one where most of the jokes fall to Vaughn, will get to that later. Wilson plays this character right but slips in placed to try and act funny. Vince Vaughn on the other hand dominates in the funny department. Owen is almost completely over shadowed by Vaughn's comedic dominance. His lines are dealt with perfectly it is just an amazing thing to witness, it is simply like this Vince Vaughn is why you should see the movie. The ladies are very good. Rachel McAdams who I think is becoming one of the best actresses around. Here she plays very innocent and she is a very likable young woman so it is hard not to want her to be happy at the end. The break out performance is from Isla Fisher who plays a crazy ass bitch who hooks up with Vince Vaughn and just won't let go. She really scared me in scenes she was outstanding, I hope to rumors about her in the next Batman movie are true.
Directing/Writing: Great idea to run with for a movie but also very hard to make last for two hours. I am comparing this movie to War of the Worlds, I know that doesn't seem to make sense but keep with me. WOTW had a great first half, very intense and even scary, the second half slowed down to the point of losing the audience. Same here the first half of this movie is hilarious you'll find yourself on the floor laughing. The second half slows down to only having one or two jokes and slowly becomes more of a basic romantic comedy. So it's like two movies in one, and one of those movies is slow and not that funny. So it's hard for me to out right love the film or out right hate it. I must say this though this movie is Vince Vaughn's show, he goes all out and he is the one pulling in the laughs here. Once he is off screen you find yourself not laughing anymore. Vaughn has been great for years his work on Swingers was amazing and it is about time people finally see how funny he really is. Oh before I forget one of the most annoying things about this film is they had to toss Will Ferrell in like he is some kind of comedy God. His character was very stupid and pulled me right out of the movie. He is a guy who crashes funeral's and like I didn't understand if I was suppose to like him, or really hate him. That was one of the worst parts of the movie and thankfully it is at the end but it almost ruined it all. Sooner or later Ferrell's shtick will die out with Kicking and Screaming bombing at the box office his time in the spot light might be up.
Overall: A decent amount of really funny moments and many likable characters. Sadly the movie looses steam half way through so towards the end you are a little tired of it all. Still a good time and one of the better comedies this summer.
