The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

Twentieth Century Fox presents a Don Murphy production

Starring: Sean Connery Shane West Stuart Townsend Peta Wilson

Directed by: Stephen Norrington

Rating:***1/2

Plot: An evil man named The Phantom is robbing the UK and killing German scientists, his goal is to start a world war in which he will fund and sell weapons. So the Brits make a team of extraordinary men and one woman to go after him and stop him before a world war begins.

Acting: This is what the movie has done right. The actors in this movie are great and have fun with their roles so its easy for an audience to enjoy themselves. Sean Connery I haft to say is one of the coolest guys I have ever seen I mean he is 007. Without him this movie would fail easily, the rest of the cast compared to him well lets just say Connery is in a league of his own. The rest of the cast does a good job. The League itself is made of characters from literature. Like Dorian Grey and Tom Sawyer and Captain Nemo and Doctor Jekyll and Hyde, plus the Invisible man and Dracula's wife. Its amazing to see these characters on screen. Peta Wilson who plays Dracula's wife is very cool and I personally think she is great. The only two actors who didn't really do anything for me was the young guys playing Sawyer and Dorian Grey. Shane West plays Tom Sawyer and something about him is just annoying. He really has no timing in this movie and has this annoying tone in his voice during the whole movie. Dorian Grey was played by Stuart Townsend you might remember this young man from Queen of the Damned which was on bad movie. He again shows his talent of not knowing how to act in this movie. He just doesn't work, he is a model and he should have stayed one because this is not working. Except one line where he says "I am complicated", that was great.

Directing/Writing: This was made from the same guy who made Blade which is a movie I loved. This movie has some very good things but sadly some bad. The style this movie has is amazing it just filmed in a great nature of darkness and old style and I was enjoying myself a lot. The first half of this movie has good timing and grace. Towards the end it starts to loose it. Everything seems to speed up and scenes are choppy. I don't know if the blame goes to editors trying to make this movie pg-13 or something. Some little details started to bother me as well. Like after a battle or something someone's clothes would be destroyed but then a second later they are fine and their clothes don't even have a tear. That got on my nerves. Also the fact they have Dracula's wife able to walk around during the day even though everyone knows vampires can't stand sun light. So I came to ask myself during the movie about that and then I found myself not caring about the movie as much as I was before. One thing I would have enjoyed was more Invisible man he doesn't really do all that much, I think they should make spin off movies about some of these characters I would personally enjoy that.

Overall: The acting was on the mark and this movie is very fun don't get me wrong. Its just the goofy way it was edited at the end with some corny scenes which made me laugh I just didn't love this movie as much as say Terminator 3. I really love the premise though and I am going to see it again and I suggest you do too and then write me what you think because I am getting mixed responses about this movie. I mean at least see it for Connery saying "That was naughty" I swear that is one of the best lines of the summer.
